Why You Can’t Stick to Healthy Habits (and How to Fix It)

Why is it so hard to eat right or sleep on time even when we know we should?

I was speaking with a friend recently. He’s hypertensive. His doctor warns him at every visit, but no real lifestyle change has happened.

I asked him, “Kuch changes kiye?”

He said, “Nahi ho pata yaar.”

“Kyun?”

“TV dekhte rehte hain raat ko, late ho jata hai… aur phir achha khaane ka mann karta hai to online order kar lete hain.”

“Toh jaldi so ja?”

“2-4 din karta hoon, phir lagta hai… office ka pressure, ghar ka stress – thoda mazaa isi se aata hai. Wo bhi na lu?”

And there it was.

May not be everyone’s story, but definitely a familiar one.

The brain craves pleasure. It avoids pain.

And things like junk food and Netflix? They offer instant pleasure surge with zero effort.

But why does our brain cling to these, even when they hurt us?

Because it’s not getting joy from anywhere else.

And why is that?

Because the right sources of joy:

  • work that aligns with our strengths
  • relationships that help you feel connected
  • movement that energizes
  • stillness that brings clarity

don’t just show up.

They need to be created, nurtured, and protected.

And what stops us from doing that?

The long time and humongous effort it will take.

Yet life itself is a long process and anything meaningful within it will take time too.

We know what to do and today is a good day to start.

It won’t be instant but it’ll be worth it.
